Compare baggage by fare and flight segment, not just by airline. Separate your personal item, cabin suitcase and checked bags, then check the number of pieces, weight and size. This guide combines verified policy examples with a worksheet for checking your booking. It does not provide live fees or one allowance that applies to every route.

Personal item and cabin suitcase are different categories
A backpack under the seat and a suitcase in the overhead bin are two types of bag. One does not give you the right to bring the other. Measure the whole bag, including wheels and handles. Check if the weight limit is for each bag or for both together. There is no universal 10 kg rule for every airline.
Volaris publishes a cabin-bag size of 55 × 40 × 25 cm and a maximum of 10 kg for that suitcase; the suitcase and personal item together must not exceed 20 kg when that baggage service is included or purchased. This does not make a cabin suitcase free on Zero or Basic. Resolve any difference between the seller’s summary and the terms for your fare before paying.

Keep the receipt for extra baggage with your ticket. Two people may each have a bag limit. That does not mean you can put all their weight in one heavy bag. Check pooling rules and the maximum for each item.
Excess weight and an extra bag need separate quotes
An extra bag, an overweight bag and an oversized item can attract different charges. Ask about all three if you carry a box or large suitcase. Do not estimate a fee from a generic price per kilogram: the service, route and when you pay matter.
Card, status and offers also change. Southwest ended its universal two-free-bag offer for new bookings from 28 May 2025, with exceptions based on fare and who qualifies. Check its official announcement and current fees. An old comparison can change the result of your budget calculation.
Choose for your actual packing list
For a backpack, first check fares that accept its size and weight. For a checked suitcase, compare a fare that includes it with a lower initial fare plus the service you need. For more than one bag, quote every piece and check restrictions for that route. No airline is best for every trip.

FAQs
Does a higher fare always include more baggage?
No. Compare the written bag limit for each person and direction. A seat or flexibility benefit does not prove that another bag is included.
Can I assume a free bag because I am visiting family in Mexico?
Only count a benefit if its conditions apply and it is confirmed for your booking. Mexico’s customs allowance does not grant free airline baggage.
